Introduction

Isn’t all this image stuff just plain common sense?

Through all my years of coaching individuals and working with a variety of small and large corporations, I have found this query to be, well, common. No clear-cut answer exists. Depending upon the personal tools you already possess, the answer is both yes and no. Some of the tips and tools introduced in this book seem like common sense to many of us, yet many individuals do not know these tools are available to them because no one ever told them.

I have met some very seasoned, executive level professionals who have the titles. You know them: President, CEO, CIO, and Director. But they do not always have the personal tools of a true professional. When someone has an important title, we expect him or her to have the corresponding interpersonal, communication, and professional image-related tools to go with their status.

Many individuals I work with have the technical knowledge to advance in their careers. They are confident and competent in their respective fields. Yet when it comes to providing excellent customer service, treating their employees with dignity and respect, practicing assertive communication skills, and using proper etiquette, it just doesn’t happen. It is not common sense to them. The combination of excellent technical competency and appropriate image-related skills is what makes the difference between professional success and failure.

That’s why I wrote this book. To prove beyond any doubt how important and lasting first impressions are and to give you the necessary tools to help you grow, evolve, and be successful in all areas of your life. I call our tools: life skills. This book is for people who want to jump-start their professional image. I’ll show you step by step exactly what you must do to generate the positive outcomes you desire. With a little instruction, a bit of insight, and a healthy dose of humor, it is my greatest hope that you will gain a new respect for those underestimated initial moments when you first meet someone.

Having the tools is really what it’s all about. Not a day goes by when we shouldn’t be considering the impact our image has on our life. Most people probably possess a common sense approach to image. We all hold within us greater potential. Big ideas about image abound, but actual advice on what to do and the steps to take to improve your professional image is in short supply. That’s the gap this book is written to fill.

"Defining Business Casual: Decoding Casual Confusion in the Workplace" by Donna Panko and Kathryn Pfeiffer

As a country, America has become more and more casual - casual in appearance, attitudes, and manners. The workplace has not been exempt from witnessing and participating in this 'casualization." The technology and dot-com boom of the 90's seemed to accelerate the business casual dress mantra which started in corporate America around 1989. The 24/7/365 service model has perpetuated the blur between work life and private life, justifying businesses giving employees opportunities to become more casual. The good news about today's workplace is that men and women have a world of choices about what to wear to work. The bad news about today's workplace is that men and women have a world of choices about what to wear to work. Therein, lies the dilemma.
